The Burgh Island Hotel
The Burgh Island Hotel is one of the best examples of 1920's architecture that you are ever likely to see in the UK. It stands as a magnificent reminder of the history that has surrounded the Bigbury on Sea area. The Burgh Island hotel has been visited by many famous celebrities over the years including Noel Coward and Agatha Christie.
Today, guests can take part in tremedously entertaining murder mystery evenings in full fancy dress costume and reenact the elegance and sophistication of the 1920's. However, if this is a bit rich for your taste, you can still enjoy the hotel without having to incur the expense, simply by taking a walk across Bigbury Beach to the top of Burgh Island, where the views are simply breathtaking.

Local Concern over Bigbury on Sea Beach Sale
One of the countries best-loved holiday destinations is up for sale, and it has left local residents a little worried. The beach separates Bigbury on Sea from Burgh Island and it is a popular holiday destination for familys from all over the UK. Some of the potential buyers have proposed the construction of beach huts and shops near or on the beach itself, leading to concern that the atmosphere and views from the many holiday homes will be ruined.
There are also concerns from holday makers that they will no longer be able to use the beach for recreation, although this has not been said directly.
It appears that what is worrying local residents and holiday makers alike is the uncertainty as to how their beloved beach will end up being used. There is no doubt that most of the buyers will be looking to use this destination to their advantage in terms of business, but at what cost will this come?
A Summer Holiday on Burgh Island
With the ever decreasing cost of air travel, combined with the clever marketing from the travel companies, the lure of overseas holidaying is sometimes hard to resist. Why woudn't we want to visit far flung destinations that differ so much from the everyday hum-drum of our lives? I quite agree with this sentiment, which is why each year I travel with my family to Bigbury on Sea in Devon, and awake each morning to the magnificent view of Burgh Island, one of the countries best kept secrets.
Burgh Island's past is rich with history and intrigue. It has been the destination for celebrities and authors such as Noel Coward and Agathor Christie and was once a haven for smugglers, protecting their misendevours behind a tide that cuts the island off from the mainland.
Burgh Island and the surrounding Bigbury on Sea is quite unlike anywhere else in the UK and could not be more different from the everyday lives we lead. It is for this reason that I chose to vacation here and not abroad. The breathtaking views, fresh air, coastal walks and relaxing atmosphere make it an incredibly special place.
So next time you are planning your annual family holiday, consider staying in the UK and visiting Burgh Island.
